Purple People Power Line
Flying Horse Farm’s psychosocial staff, led by a full-time certified Child Life Specialist, are fondly called the “Purple People” because they wear purple badge lanyards during camp sessions. More commonly seen in hospital settings, certified Child Life Specialists are educated and clinically trained in the developmental impact of illness and injury. They help infants, children, and families cope with the stress and uncertainty of acute and chronic illness, trauma, loss, and bereavement. The role provides evidence-based, and psychologically appropriate interventions including therapeutic play and education to reduce fear, anxiety, and pain in children. In late April, Flying Horse Farms launched a new Purple People Power Line to provide ongoing psychosocial, behavioral, and mental health support to campers and their families. As of May 1, campers have scheduled 32 calls – including 26 within 24 hours of the program announcement.
